    Vegas
DH and I went to Vegas earlier in the month to celebrate our anniversary and had a lovely time.

The trip out was a bit delayed due to some de-icing of the plane. Given the snow that was coming down at the time, we were just happy that the plane took off. We didn't schedule any shows for that first day, just to account for travel time.

We stayed at the Paris, which is the same hotel we stayed at for our honeymoon. Our room included a partial view of the fountains at the Bellagio and we could also see mountains, which was lovely.

DH planned the entire trip, which I am very grateful for because I hate planning this type of thing. I had saved up money for the trip and told him how much we had available to spend and he went from there. Yay!

    Tree
The tree is finally completely decorated. My plan to get it decorated a couple of nights ago was thwarted by the fact that DH was in charge of putting up the lights. He was also watching "Tin Man" on the Sci-Fi channel, so the lights were going up during commercials. He was about 2/3 of the way through with the task by the end of the night. What can I say? The man loves the sci-fi channel. :) He did finish yesterday and so I was free to put the ornaments tonight.

When I was growing up, the day after Christmas, my mom would take my sister and I to a local store to pick out one ornament each. We also received a bunch of ornaments as gifts, especially ones that were specific to what we were doing or interested in that year. She labeled the bottom of the ornaments (when it was feasible to do so) with the initial of the owner and the year.

Putting up the ornaments this year, I saw
*the ornament that was a gift from my pre-school teachers
*the ornament that my parents bought me the year I worked at McDonald's when I was in high school
*the ornaments that people bought us to commemorate our first Christmas as a married couple
*ornaments that my mom made during various craft-oriented bursts throughout the years
*stuffed ornaments that my mom sent me to put at the bottom of the tree so that kitties would have ornaments to terrorize without hurting themselves
*gifts from various important people in my life, including [info]daniljt and [info]stitchingrandma.

I love putting the ornaments on the tree each year and am so grateful that my mom started this tradition with us!

    kitties sans me
I was out of town for Thanksgiving, but due to an emergency work situation, DH had to stay home.  Once we learned that he would have to stay home, I realized that this was the first time that the cats have had DH at home without me.  According to DH, it was a bit traumatic for Lana.  The first night, she sat by the basement door and meowed with increasing volume for awhile, being convinced that I had to be down there.  He eventually let her in the basement so that she could see for herself that I wasn't there.  She went tearing down there, then back upstairs and investigated the rest of the house before realizing I wasn't there.  The next night, when I was talking to DH on the phone, he put the phone up to Lana and she nuzzled it.  Poor kitty.  She's lying on a chair next to me as I type.   Grace didn't demonstrate any noticeable distress about me being gone, but since I got home, she's climbed on my lap a couple of times for some petting.  She's not much of a lap kitty and so it's quite sweet.

Trip details will be in a separate post.

    ditech
Every time I see a commercial for ditech, I wonder who on earth would use a company with the slogan "people are smart."  Yeah, not only do I not believe it, I don't believe the folks at ditech believe it either.

For kicks, I opened a tab and brought up their website.  They have it set up so that the tab reads "Sleep EZ with Ditech Home Loans: ..."  As if their slogan wasn't enough proof, their use of "EZ" indicates that I'm not a member of their target audience.  I do have a mortgage, but, unsurprisingly, it isn't through ditech.

On an unrelated manner, I was watching a rerun of The Colbert Report tonight.  During "The Word" section, he was chatting about the job of the president of the U.S. as outlined in the Constitution and the difference between that and the job that Bush holds.  Anyway, when he mentioned the job that Bush has, the text on the screen read "International Burnt Effigy Model."  Ha!

How much for that kitty in the window?
I've put a picture of Grace in her most recent new location (new to me, that is) under the cut.   She was very displeased about not being able to talk to all the trick-or-treaters last night, but we opened a window and she was able to stare down at all the kids in her best effort at being menacing.  Even if it wasn't Halloween, she still would have spent the evening in Catzkaban.  One of the people we had over for a small Halloween get-together was her sworn mortal enemy.  My friend doesn't have a problem with Grace, but Grace has a strong opinion about this particular friend.

Lots of cute trick-or-treaters last night.  There was an adorable penguin, a little boy dressed up as Jigsaw from Saw, a Superman, a couple of Elmos, and various other cute kids.  The smallest kids were having trouble with the concept of trick-or-treating and would try to come into our house.  I guess that makes sense.  They aren't used to approaching houses with the intention of standing there for a couple of seconds and leaving.

    Halloween
    Happy Halloween!

Tonight, we have plans with some friends. Our house gets a lot of trick-or-treaters, so people are coming over here. I need to stock up on candy this morning. I could have done that awhile back, but then we would have eaten ridiculous amounts of it before this point. After the trick-or-treaters slow down, we'll pop in a horror movie, eat and drink a bit.

Lana is sick. She threw up a couple of times this morning, mostly on easily cleanable surfaces, with one exception. I fed the little beasts a few minutes ago and am keeping an eye on her. Poor kitty. Nothing like waking up in the morning to the unmistakable sound of a cat getting sick. If you have a cat, you know what I mean. I have a few pictures of Grace I want to upload. She managed to reach yet another spot we didn't know she could get to. She's my little Houdini cat.

My advisor is the best. Awhile back, I had mentioned to him that my MIL wanted a certain type of outdoor light as a gift. I cannot, for the life of me, remember why I mentioned it, though. Anyway, her birthday has passed, but since DH was the one responsible for researching and buying that part of the gift, it still hasn't been purchased. On some tasks, he procrastinates. Clearly, this was one of them. Anyway, my advisor walked into our meeting yesterday with some random catalog that he had gotten in the mail that had a light that would work. Ha! That man is wonderful.

We bought a new car recently since DH's car had a lot of miles on it and the engine had developed an issue. He didn't trade-in his old car because he wanted to get a better deal on it. Before we were married, he kept a car for two years because he "didn't get around to" selling it. I hope this post isn't making it sound like DH procrastinates on everything. He doesn't, but when he does procrastinate, he *really* procrastinates. Anyway, that car ended up being donated because we were moving and I didn't want to haul a car that wasn't worth much and hadn't been maintained for two years across a few states. So, as soon as I learned he hadn't traded in the old car, we discussed how long it would be before we sold the car to Carmax. We settled on one week. I don't want to be paying indefinitely for insurance on a car we aren't using. A neighbor was interested in the old car for his son, but since the son is currently using his dad's car free of charge, the son wasn't quite so motivated to buy. I see the son's point. Anyway, Carmax now has the car and we are down to the number of cars we should have. Another neighbor is quite fond of the son who decided not to buy the car. When I mention her to DH, I refer to her as "Mrs. Robinson." The bad news is that I can't remember her real name. Oops.

    Cards
I haven't been stamping very much recently, but have made a few cards in the last couple of months.  I've been branching out a bit and now have some smartass sentiments from a few different companies.  I have a catalog on the way from another company that has lots of fun stamps, including one that I've been looking for in order to send a card to my sister.  "I'm smiling because you're my sister.  I'm laughing because there is nothing you can do about it."

    Fun links
I learned about both of these on SCS.

A youtube clip for hatemailgreetings.com.  Yes, it is a real store for those special occasions that Hallmark just doesn't cover.

    Torturing Cats
Today is my least favorite day of the year. Glancing at the time, I know that I need to get going soon because capturing the fuzzballs isn't the easiest thing to do. It's a balancing act because I don't want to capture them too early and have them stuck in their crates for a long time. I don't want to capture them too late because then, like the Great Underestimation of 2004, I'll be late to their annual check-up. In 2004, the kitties were just over a year old. They had been so easy to get in their crate in 2003. They were tiny that year! Yeah, they complained, but they weren't too difficult to deal with. In 2004, I thought it would be more of the same. Sadly, the cats had grown bigger and had also developed a stronger opinion about going to the vet. I got Grace into the carrier, but once she was trapped in there, she issued meow warnings to her sister and capturing Lana was an adventure that included relocating much of the furniture in our master bedroom. I was able to get Lana in the carrier, but Grace escaped. After a fair amount of chasing, sweating, and pleading with the cats that it was for their own good (it turns out they are impervious to "it's for your own good!" arguments), I got to the vet at least 20 minutes late. 2005 was a transition year for us, involving two carriers. 2006 went much better because I had a system. I will use the system of 2006 again today, hoping that the cats have not plotted to circumvent said system. There are carriers sitting in two different bathrooms. The cats will, one by one, be trapped in a bathroom including a carrier. Only after the cats are in a confined space will I start the process of putting them in their carriers. Okay, I'm going in. Wish me luck.

    Burrito Apostasy
I feel like I'm being punished for my burrito apostasy. I used to have this lovely fake ticker that "counted" down the seconds until my microwave burrito would be ready. I used it in my signature at LJT for awhile. After I grew bored with it, I took it out of my signature and now am being punished for my burrito apostasy. I cannot find the image anywhere. Arrrgh.

A friend has offered to help me look. She is the search queen, but I'm not hopeful. I turned my back on the burrito ticker and now it has been taken from me. Sigh.

I purchased a gift membership for Netflix for a family member (FM) recently. I was being an idiot and so didn't think about the fact that Netflix would require a credit card number from the other person in case she decides to throw the DVDs in a bonfire. Naturally, FM doesn't give out credit card information unless absolutely necessary. FM called up Netflix to try to get around the restriction and grew greatly irritated at the response. I gave Netflix a call, explained the situation, and put it on my credit card. It isn't a huge risk given that Netflix already has my cc # for my own account. ;) The customer service person was lovely and now the account has been set up. Hopefully, FM isn't too soured from the earlier phone conversation. I'm annoyed with myself that I didn't think about the fact they would require a credit card number. It was listed in the fine print and so I have no excuse, just skimmed the fine print too quickly.

    Journal Move
For the past five years, I've been keeping an online journal at another site.  While I love the site and will still be visiting there, I've decided that LJ is a better fit for my needs at this point.  The truly important posts will be kept public so that everyone can know the details of the lives of my cats.  Less important issues like work, family, school, and that sort of thing will be kept friends-only.  If you wish to be added to my friends list, please comment, letting me know who you are and where I know you from.  Thanks!

    Har!
Of course, a LJ is necessary because just one internet journal isn't enough. I really have no idea if I'll use this, but maybe it will be useful in the future.

Really, my prime motivation is to stop showing up as "anonymous" when posting in a friend's lj. I hate that.
